Stretching over approximately 1727 km, it is one of the oldest and largest tiger reserves in India. It was established as a national park in 1955 and was later merged with Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary in 1995 to form the present day Tadoba-Andhari National park under the project tiger initiative.

This reserve is most notably famous for its healthy tiger population, as of census of 2018 Tadoba has 88 wild tigers.

These royal beasts can often be seen cooling off near the numerous lakes, water holes and streams of Tadoba during the scorching months of summer. Tadoba is also home to other predators such as leopards, wild dogs and striped hyenas. Many crocodiles, monitor lizards and snakes are also spotted in various waterbodies of this rich ecosystem. The reserve is divided into several tourism zones, with Moharli and Kolara being the most famous.

Kanha
National Park

Located in Madhya Pradesh in India, Kanha National Park is a wildlife conservation area famous for having a good number of Bengal tigers. This unspoiled refuge covers 940 sq. miles and has Sal forests, grasslands and streams which are perfect for the regal cats.

Formed as part of Project Tiger in 1973, Kanha has emerged as a sanctuary where tigers are plentiful and have ample food in the form of chital, sambar and even the near threatened Barasingha only found here.

The population of tigers in the park has been counted to be between 80 and 100 cats and this is because of good management measures that include anti-poaching patrols and habitat management. These regal predators can be seen stalking their prey or lounging by water holes when spotted by visitors on jeep safaris as they have an orange and black coat that helps them to camouflage in the environment.

Along with tigers, Kanha supports leopards, sloth bears and more than three hundred bird species.

Kanha has successfully reintroduced the Barasingha which is encouraging. The park is considered a model of tiger conservation and is visited by tourists to admire its natural beauty and wildlife. Kanha is a clear testimony of the fact that nature is robust, and it needs protection from humans.

The park is famous for having a thriving population of Bengal tigers, but it also supports leopards, Indian bison, spotted deer, wild boars and more than  300 species of birds including the crested serpent eagle and Malabar pied hornbill.

The Pench River is the source of life for this diverse ecosystem, meandering through the dense sal and teak forests, hills, and meadows.

Doing a tiger safari here by jeep or canter is an exciting exercise. Turia and Karmajhiri are core zones that offer high chances of tiger sightings with the help of experienced naturalists who can identify pugmarks and alarm calls. This diversity and richness of the ecosystem inspired Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.

Madhya Pradesh

Satpura
National Park

One of the Central Indian’s most significant tiger habitats, Bori Wildlife Sanctuary and Pachmarhi Sanctuary, together encompass an area of 2,133 km² and form a crucial part of the Satpura Tiger Reserve since its establishment in 1981 in Mahadeo Hills of Madhya Pradesh.

The rugged landscape of deep valleys, sandstone peaks and dense sal and teak forests makes this park ideal territory for the majestic Royal Bengal Tiger. The terrain of the park varies from 300 to 1,352 meters in elevation and currently there are about 52 tigers that ambulate the area.

The topography and the biodiversity of the park are conducive to the growth of the Satpura range tigers. The commitment of the reserve towards tiger conservation has led to the creation of a protected corridor, so that these apex predators can continue to prosper along with other wildlife like leopards, sloth bears, gaur and wild dogs. You can see these rare big cats during jeep safaris or a boat ride on the Denwa River within the park.

The park’s walking safaris are quite uncommon to encounter tiger habitat on foot, but this is done with trained guides and proper safety precautions. The tiger population of Satpura can be regarded as a conservation success story in the context of the challenging central Indian landscape of tiger protection efforts and is therefore a necessary location for understanding tiger ecology in its natural environment.
